Fern Sapphire is a landscape design studio based in Roppongi, Tokyo, working exclusively on private estate grounds, decorative ponds and alpine rock gardens.
A garden should feel inevitable
We design landscapes that seem to have always belonged to their setting. Our work brings together the geological character of a site, the architecture of a home and the daily rituals of the people who live there.
Rather than imposing a signature style, we listen for the quiet clues already present: a view, a slope, a stand of trees or the way rain moves across the ground.
From a Roppongi studio to the wider grounds
Fern Sapphire began as a small practice for private residences in central Tokyo and grew through referrals from clients who valued discretion, detail and long-term care.
Today, our designers, horticulturalists and stone craftsmen work as one studio across Minato-ku and the surrounding estates. The scale has changed; the close attention has not.
Water, stone and living time
Our capabilities span decorative ponds, alpine rock gardens, estate planting, stone paths, garden lighting and seasonal stewardship. Each discipline is considered as part of one connected landscape.
We design for the first impression and for the fiftieth season, specifying materials and plants that gain character rather than simply wearing out.
Principles that guide every commission
We favour restraint over ornament, honest materials over imitation and thoughtful maintenance over short-lived perfection.
We protect existing trees where possible, source stone with a sense of place, and make practical systems quiet enough to disappear into the experience of the garden.
Milestones measured in seasons
Our first decade established a trusted construction practice. The next brought larger estate commissions, deeper nursery relationships and a dedicated approach to water quality.
In recent years, we have expanded our maintenance work so a finished garden remains a living collaboration, reviewed through spring growth, summer weather and winter structure.
